Common sticker failures and how to avoid them

When a label peels, the usual causes are dirt, a damp or cold fit, the wrong product for that panel, or a surface that was never going to hold.

What we see

Edge lift usually means the panel was not clean, the edge was not squeegeed, or the machine was washed before the adhesive had settled. Bubbles are trapped air, or fluid left under a film that was applied wet when it should have been dry. Letters that shrink or crack on a curve have been stretched, or they have been forced around a bead the film was not meant to turn.

Plastic guards and covers are a separate problem. Some plastics hold adhesive badly. Test a small piece on a hidden area of that same plastic before you brand a whole guard. Faded print on a scuffed face is usually a film that had no laminate where the hire life is rough, or a sticker that has simply been on too long for that yard. We do not publish a universal life in years. It depends on the panel, the weather and how the machine is used.

Do not keep repeating it

If the same edge lifts on every machine of one type, stop reordering the same film for that panel. Send a photo of the failed sticker and of the panel. Say how long it stayed on and whether the machine is washed every night. We would rather change the product than print another box of labels that will peel. A failure on one dirty panel is a clean-and-refit. A failure on every clean panel is a different question.

What to do

Do not stick a new label over the failed one and hope. Take it off, clean as if you were starting again, and fit a new sticker of the grade you actually need for that panel. If you are not sure which grade, ask with a photo of the panel before you reorder the same product. Catalogue stickers in stock can dispatch the same day. A change of size or artwork is quoted.
