Forklift fleets use thorough examination date labels so the next date is on the truck, not only in a folder in the office.
Titan does not carry out thorough examinations. A label shows the dates and wording you supply. It does not replace the written report.
A forklift is lifting equipment
HSE’s thorough examination guidance treats lift trucks as lifting equipment that may need daily checks by the user, and a thorough examination by a competent person. The thorough examination is the systematic examination and the written report. The daily check is not that examination.
Regulation 9 requires in-service thorough examinations where deterioration could lead to danger. Unless an examination scheme says otherwise, lifting equipment used to lift people, and lifting accessories, are at least every 6 months. Other lifting equipment is at least every 12 months. A forklift that lifts people, for example with a work platform, falls in the 6 month group because the regulation covers lifting equipment for lifting persons. The competent person, not the label printer, confirms what applies to each truck.
Where to put the label
Put it where the operator and the person handing the truck out can read it, and not over the manufacturer’s plates or controls. Clean the panel first. The words and the date are the ones you supply. If a report later changes the date, replace the label. Do not leave an old date on the mast because the sticker still looks tidy.
If a defect is found
Regulation 10 says the person making the thorough examination must tell the employer forthwith about a defect which is or could become a danger to people, and must make a written report. Where there is an existing or imminent risk of serious personal injury, a copy goes to the relevant enforcing authority. The employer must not use the equipment before the defect is rectified. A sticker that still shows a future date does not override that.
